North Country Fair

Photo Gallery
The North Country Fair is known as the smallest, major folk festival in Alberta.
Located in the hamlet of Joussard, about 35 kilometres east of High Prairie, along the beautiful shores of Lesser Slave Lake, it certainly is a most idyllic location for a fair.
Although usually held on the weekend closest to the summer solstice, the date has been changed this year to accomodate the commemoration of the signing of Treaty 8 held on the summer solstice weekend. This year the fair will be held on the 21, 22 and 23 of June. It traditionally draws around 5,000 people from all over Alberta.
It features dozens of entertainers, from soloists to bands and even international groups.
A unique aspect about the fair is the wide range of entertainment and activities featured to appeal to all age groups and interests. There is a children’s tent and wandering children’s entertainers, jugglers and clowns.
There are sites for alternative health remedies, workshops and massages as well as numerous tents which sell crafts, fair souvenirs and the performers’ CDs and tapes. There is also no shortage of food kiosks.
The music takes place on several stages scattered around the grounds, including the main stage performances which take place each evening.
And after the main stage ends, around midnight, smaller stages spring up again and fairgoers have no trouble dancing the night away.
Security is tight and there is no alcohol allowed on the grounds. The fair is geared to encourage family fun.
Camping is available at reasonable rates in various sites in Joussard as well as outside the main gates which turns into a tent city during the weekend.
Fair prices include a daily rate or weekend pass and discounts for buying early. Watch for posters throughout the area as the fair date draws near advertising ticket prices and the performers’ line-up for this year.
